The following work is a revision of the former end first edition thereof published by Zion's Ensign, Independence, Missouri, in 1909. The manuscript was prepared during some months preceding, close to the old Mexican frontier, at intervals during a missionary campaign.
This work is definitive-not simply compilatory. It is a dictionary - not a concordance. It aims to give the who, when, what end where of the Nephite record. It is therefore, historical, biographical gazetteerical and chronological. The author's aim has been to squeeze together in the least possible space the largest volume of needed information.
Modern geographical names are generally excluded, save as they are accompanied with a "probably." Modern research and discovery may yet afford, increased if not full justification for our wonted substitution of the place-designations of today for the ancient ones handed down.
The full and fine-point pronunciations in this work are absent, owing to the war situation. Those symbols remain unavailable to the printers right now when press work is about to begin. With hyphens and accents, however, the subject-names are divided into syllables, which will greatly lessen the aptitude to variance and nonuniformity in usage. The author plans to have a separate print in leaflet form, of the difficult units with their pronunciations, as the way opens up in a few months. It will take but a couple of pages and will be made adaptable to attachment in the back of the small-size Book of Mormon - where it ought to be, July 17,1945.                  -A. K.
