He was rejected and was about to return to his own land (probably Nephi) when God intercepted him and commanded him to return and preach to the Nephites. He did so from the walls of the city of Zarahemla of which Nephi was a resident and who was living at that time. After foretelling many things, the signs of Christ's birth and crucifixion, the destruction of the Nephites; and after a prodigious escape from his malignant persecutors, he returned unto his own country and was never heard of again among the Nephites. Hel. i; v:124. His prophecies are referred to by Nephi, Jesus, and Mormon. 3 Ne. iv:l-5; 3 Ne. x:33-41; Morm. i:34-41.

C., S. was murdered by his brother Seantum, the guilt of whom was prophetically located by Nephi. Hel. iii:49-111. See Cezoram and Zeezrom. (The author has modified the syllabification of the above S., for another needed pronunciatory contrast between these three names.)

Morm. i:47-62.

SHEM, Land of
Portion of territory immediately surrounding the city of S. (q. v.).

SHEM'LON, Land of
In the land of Nephi, in the region of Lehi-Nephi. It was formerly a Nephite possession; after Mosiah I (200 B. C.), a Lamanite possession. We must not confound it with the land Shilom which the Lamanites ceded to the people of Zeniff. It was in the land of S. that the Lamanite daughters were seized and carried away by the priests of Noah. The inhabitants of S. were converted by the sons of Mos. 91-77 B. C., from Zarahemla to Antionum. He took possession of the sacred records in 55 B. C. which descended to him from his brother Helaman who died the year previous. Shiblon died in 52 B. C., previous to which he entrusted the records to his nephew, Helaman II.; Corianton, the brother of S. having gone northward. About twenty-two years elapse between the circumstances of the first and last mention of him. As a Nephite, he was doubtless born in the land of Zarahemla where he died middle-aged; was contemporary with Moroni, Teancum, Nephi and Lehi, Moronihah, Pahoran, and with Zerahemnah, Amalickiah and Ammo-ron, the Lamanite invaders. All its inhabitants were converted by the sons of Mosiah on their mission of 91-77 B. C. Mos. v:3-14; vi:8-38; vii:16-19; x; xi:44-53; Al. xiv:7-16.

Mormon fulfilled this in A. D. 345.

Within A. D. 374-279 Mormon took the remainder of the records from said hill and carried the entire set to Cumorah. 4 Ne. 56-59; Morm. i:1-46; ii:15-25.

Shule, born in captivity, raised an army and recovered the kingdom to his father; for which service his father bestowed upon him the kingdom. His peace was afterward disturbed by the rebellion of his nephew, Noah, son of Corihor, who held S. in captivity for a time. But the sons of S. slew Noah, and replaced their father upon his throne.
