E-GYP'TIAN, Reformed
Name of the characters on the plates from which the B. of M. was translated. The plates of brass which Nephi took from Laban and which were brought to America contained the five books of Moses, a record of the Jews down to the time of Zedekiah, some of the prophets, also the genealogy of Lehi's fathers. 1 Ne. i:157-168. Lehi "having been taught in the language of the Egyptians, therefore he could read these engravings." Mosiah i:1. Nephi sets out to make his record in the language of his father which consisted of the "learning of the Jews, and the language of the Egyptians." 1 Ne. i:l. Some 1,000 years later (A. D. 400) Moroni declares that they adopted the R. E. system on account of their plates being insufficiently large to accommodate Hebrew; which presents to us the nature of the R. E. as one phonetic. He says that the R. E. had been handed down and altered by them and that the Hebrew had been subjected to alteration also. Morm. iv:98-193. Hence they had the R. E. and the reformed Hebrew; the former for writing, the latter for speaking.

E-GYP'TIANS

He was begotten in the old age of his father Omer, and two years before the latter's death he anointed E. to reign in his stead. The Jaredites prospered under the righteous reign of E., who saw Jesus Christ, and who four years before his death anointed his son Coriantum to succeed him. Eth. i:6; iv:5-34.

EM'RON
A Nephite officer in the army of Mormon, whom the latter mentions in his second epistle to Moroni as having fallen by the sword, A. D. 326-384. Moro. ix:2.

E'NOS
One of the Nephite prophets who held the sacred plates. Grandson of Lehi who come out from Jerusalem, and son of Jacob from whom he received the plates. He committed the plates to his son Jarom 421 B. C. His father was born in the wilderness ere the colony crossed the deep (600-590 B. C.), and E., was "soon to go down to his grave" in 421 B. C., or 179 years after the departure from Jerusalem. He was converted while on a hunt for beasts in the forest, prayed and heard the voice of God; and declared the word of God all his days. Jac. v:42-48; En. 42-46; Ja. i:l-5.

Both Kib and Corihor reigned over the land of Moron which was near the land called Desolation by the Nephites. This Kib was the grandson of the immigrant Jared. Eth. iii:45-52.

Equality
The B. M. emphasizes e.: "that there should be e. among all men"; that "the preacher was no better than the hearer" nor "the teacher any better than the learner; and thus they were all equal and they did all labor." Al. i:37-39. Mos. xi:153-155. See Common.
ES-ROM
Son of Omer, Jaredite king, and brother of Coriantumr and Jared (q. v.). Jared who came from Babel was his fifth progenitor. His father had been rebelled against and subjected to captivity by his brother Jared, E. and Coriantumr, angered at their brother, raised an army, battled with their brother Jared and recovered the kingdom to their father. When another attempt was made by Jared against his father to destroy him Omer fled with all his family (save Jared) to the east coast to Ablom via hill Shim, it is probable that E. was included. Eth. iii:67-82; iv:l-5.

E'THEM
A Jaredite king who executed judgment in wickedness all his days. He was the third progenitor of the prophet Ether, and was the son of King Ahab whom he succeeded, and father of Moron who succeeded him. In his days prophets came predicting the utter destruction of the people if they did not repent. He reigned after their population and territory was greatly extended. Eth. iv:60-90, 99-110.

E' THER
Last Jaredite prophet. Son of Coriantor who was born and died in captivity. Hence E. was born in captivity. In the days of his father there came many prophets predicting the destructions that awaited the people if they did not repent; that they would be utterly destroyed and that the Lord would bring forth another people. This warning voice was perpetuated by Ether in the days of Coriantumr who was "king over all the land" (perhaps in Mexico.) Ether being rejected he fled to the cavity of a rock for his safety, where he made his record, going out by night to take cognizance of the situation in the interest of his record. He lived to witness the destruction of every soul as he had prophesied, save Coriantumr; and concerning himself he adds: "Whether the Lord will that I be translated, or that I suffer the will of the Lord in the flesh, it mattereth not." He dwelt near where the last battle was fought near the hill Ramah (about B. C. 600 or later.) Eth. v:l-18; vi:l-109.

E'THER, Book of
The 14th and next to the last book of the B. of M. It is contained between the books Mormon and Moroni. It has only six chapters, mostly historical, and covers a span of about 1,600 years-2,200-600 or later B. C., or thereabouts. It gives an account of the first company, estimated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of thirty souls, who came to America from the Tower of Babel at the beginning of the period indicated; crossing the Atlantic ocean and landing on the eastern coast of, probably Mexico, and finally being destroyed about 600-200 B. C. (See Jaredites, also Coriantumr and Ether preceding).

In the last generation of these people there lived a prophet by the name of Ether (q. v.). He wrote their history and other matters on twenty-four gold plates and hid them (about 600-200 B. C.) in a manner that they were found (B. C. 121) by the people who succeeded the Jaredites; and were translated by King Mosiah (121-91 B. C.) from the Adamic language into the Nephite language. They were thenceforth had by the Nephite prophets down to Moroni who (A. D. 400-420) makes an abridgment in N. A. of the contents of the twenty-four plates.

So that the book of E. in the B. of M. is not the original book of E., but merely a condensed account of its contents written by Moroni, who owns that he had "not written a hundredth part." Mos. v:57-71; ix:163-175: xii:l2-21; Eth. i:l-14;vi:98-109; Moro. i:l-4.

EVE
The first woman. Mentioned in 1 Ne. i:157-163 and 2 Ne. i:l0l-121.

E-ZI'AS
An ancient prophet mentioned in Hel. iii:76-79. It is probable that he is the same character mentioned in D. and C 83:2, who lived in the days of Abraham on the eastern hemisphere.

Ez'rom
